Regional Identity
AC1: Informing Ideas
Client: The Client of this project are called Sunderland Culture and they are a company organized by the counsel as well as Sunderland university and other organizations that come together to form a sort of Charity to help bring the cultures of Sunderland together. Sunderland Culture allow others in specific cultures to take part in certain activities and come to realize the ambitions of these specific cultures and the cities they live in and in 2018, Sunderland Culture became a Council for Arts and a National Portfolio Organization. The Winter Gardens is where the Client normally operates which is in Mowbray Town, the reason why the winter gardens are good for the gatherings is because it has that atmosphere where others in the community can enjoy it to see the scenery. Sunderland Culture stand for their will to make sure the city knows about their cause which is to make people starting thinking about their identity and about the places they live in, the main point is to get people to change their perspectives about Sunderland or the North East. The Key Stakeholders for this Company is that they expand their awareness to the city and possibly the entire north east and the United Kingdom thanks to their support of the communities that wish to aid them in their campaign about identities and along where they are located, Sunderland Culture are a determined company that want what is best for their clients.
Requirements: The Clients are expecting us to make a short video, documentary or print advert about the identity of a person in the places they live and giving their perspective. For the documentary it should be around 7-10 minutes long and the short video should be an average of 5 minutes or a maximum of 8 minutes long but not much longer than that unless doing a documentary, the documentary must consist of an idea came up by yourself and must have something to do with the topic of identity, The print advert must be promotional to the audience that you are presenting it for and must show a photo taken by yourself and edited over to relate to the topic and Finally the short video is the same for the documentary except with the duration time and must be consistent for the audience to understand the true topic of what was being asked.
Audience: The Targeted Audience for this project are people aged 16-25 year old's as they are the age range that normally think about their identity as well as their Psychographics and Demographics, the Psychographics are the Social grades C and D as those classes are things such as Low Working Class, Skilled Working Class and normal Working Class. Psychographics are things such as interests, hobbies, lifestyle choices and emotional triggers. Demographics are things such as Age, Sex, Education, Religion and Ethnicity.
The Social Grade: for the targeted audience would grades C1-2 and D grade because some of the people who are in this targeted in this audience and in this Social Grade are normally in the working years and have jobs or not and work for a living also to add on with that, The targeted audience's working life can also relate to their identity which can impact them depending on their occupation.
Qualitative: The responses on how others felt about the places they live in went into description on how and why they do or do not like the place they live such as Sunderland. Such responses were things like "I think that it has become sort of a ghost town as there isn't enough for young people to enjoy in the town anymore, shops shut too early and there isn't many inexpensive restaurants around." This means that this person who made this response has a lot of issues with the area in Sunderland and want change to places they have described like shops shutting too early to have a later closing time and make restaurants have cheaper prices.
"I don't mind Sunderland, since it is home, but I think growing up here maybe gives me a different perspective on it rather than that someone who didn't." This means that this person who responded has a decent opinion on the place but may think others who may begin growing up here will have a harder time when it comes to living conditions and others may have different opinions on where they live.
Quantities: According to the responses I have received, a majority of people have said they would wish for others or themselves to leave the city of Sunderland when looking at the decisions on the pie chart, this could mean that the decisions that some have made do not like their general atmosphere and wish to move away to somewhere nicer in the north east and also a good point is on why those who don't like their living situation and it could be for different reasons such as people or just the general atmosphere of the place.
Analysis: The main analysis I have gathered is that a large majority do not like the place they live in giving by the responses and have given their respected feedback and described what its like for them living in Sunderland and the North East in general. Some words said are words such as unchanging and neglected, this means that some think the city of Sunderland has been left to rot and become bad and hasn't changed over the years and could possibly make tourists stay away from the city and go somewhere else. Other words that were slightly positive were things such as Passionate and Potential. In the word of Potential, this could mean that there is a chance for Sunderland and the North East to be better and improve where as right now the pace is at a slow start, but the people who live in Sunderland are very Passionate about somethings they like such as Football as in an example of the Documentary "Sunderland Til I Die" Which shows how the public likes to watch and enjoy a sport that has been around for many years and as they evolve people still enjoy both young and old.
Other Analysis I have found is the main age of the audience and it shows how these types of people normally question their identity and what age range they are at. The age range that i have looked at the people ages 16 and then further and this type of age range is suitable because it is normally young adults that have these types of questions about who they are and their main identity when it comes to either their living spaces or their general town, city or village.
Audience Profile:
What is a Documentary: A Documentary is a film or television program that covers certain topics surrounding around different topics and which can provide different types of entertainment to the audiences that watch them whether its educational or just general entertainment. Documentaries can be any duration depending on the topics the cover but the appropriate duration of a documentary would be 40 minutes long and from what that has been seen online, there are those that have shorter documentaries like 15 minutes which is what I have been tasked with doing in my own documentary that is upcoming.
There are six different types of documentaries and those are poetic, expository, reflexive, observational, performative and participatory and each have their own set of characteristics. Poetic uses such things like focusing on images, experiences and showing audiences different things in the eyes, Expository documentaries use narration that is described as "The Voice of God" and wish to inform and persuade the audience to be interested in the topics. Reflexive documentaries are types that include the film maker in the video and have them be a part of the cast but normally the main focus is on the one thats making the film and the pacific acts in that documentary, with Observational documentaries are focusing on aiming to observe the world around it and provide both sides of the story a chance to shine and talk about known problems depending on the topic. Performative is where the main subject is stressed and gets an emotional share with the world that shows this specific film and they normally use personal situations to construct a certain part of the film and finally with Participatory documentaries, they show the film maker with a narrative and it can be either a minor role or a bigger role and can have voice their questions behind the camera, with either role the film maker can influence that specific narrative throughout their creation.
For what Documentary style would fit me the best would probably have to be Observational as the main focus of my film is that I aim to explore both sides of why the people like the sport football so much and how it helps them identify themselves which explore questions like what the sport means to them and some others as well.
My Idea: The idea I have came up with is a documentary about certain cultures in the north east especially Sunderland. The video length will be like normal and possibly around 10-15 minutes long and will be edited on Premiere Pro. The video will be inspired by other documentaries online about cultures and I will gain inspiration from them such as how they described the specific cultures and how they are different because what I have learnt is that Many people view the North East of the United Kingdom differently and which is why people make their opinions about the places they live in and have put online on social media platforms like twitter for example and on a certain website people have voted what are the worse places to live in the UK such as Number 1 which was Peterborough. That means that the people who live in certain places don't like their lifestyles, this helps me because I can now get a good idea of what I should include in my video when it is in production.
Idea Feedback
The Feedback that I received from this idea was that some of the audience suggested that this was a good idea and would like me to progress it further but some of the comments were valid criticisms saying that it would be a difficult challenge to get the information for these different topics that surrounded the main subject of the idea. Other feedback that was given to me by the audience was that the audience liked the idea that I wanted to find different opinions of people in the north east and to show the communication skills of myself when doing these types of interviews and by doing this, I can learn from the people that I interview about what their different opinions of the places they live in but while getting this good feedback the main criticism was how many people I was going to interview and how I would gain this knowledge which was fair enough on the behalf of what research I had to do for this task to be complete and when looking at all this feedback, I felt like a new idea should be thought about mainly because of how difficult the first idea was and getting to look into other ideas that have to do with cultures in the north east and with the examples I have already done, I do think it will not be hard to think about what my final idea will be.
New Idea 2022
My new idea that I came up with over the months in planning this project would be to identify how the topic of Identity can relate to a certain culture of my choice and with that I chose the culture of football as that is a very popular sport in this part of the country so getting to know what the culture is like would be very useful for the main topic the client is requesting, What I intend to do is that I wish to show what some peoples takes are in the football world and to also show some parts that are different from each other such as the toxicity. The Clips and footages that I will use will be shown the best they can be and will have good scenery in all of them, this documentary will be a 10 minute long video made by myself and will include things like effects, facts and knowledge of interviewees that will be asked questions that are scripted and worked on by myself, This helps me because I now get to learn about the culture of football as being someone who isn't really familiar with the sport of football and the other reason on why this helps me is because it can help me understand more about the identity of different people as the cultures that some people are in can benefit them and help become more welcomed by their community.
Existing Products:
The types of already existing products are somethings like documentaries, for example Sunderland til I die which shows how the people of Sunderland react and how they seem to enjoy the team and sport which shows others expressing their identity as someone who enjoys sport and watching or going to see matches played by the Sunderland Team. This Documentary shows it’s an audience how the Team has evolved during the years and giving them facts as it progresses on, it also includes interviews to the stars of the Documentary as they talk about what’s going on during the matches that go on. The people of Sunderland enjoy the matches they go see or watch on the television and in this series of documentaries it shows how much the sport and team mean to them whether it makes them happy or violent, this documentary also provides a good set different camera angles such as Close up, Shoulder Level, Eye Level and High Angle along with a variety of scenes that include types of music and sometimes voiceovers.
How this works for the audience is that it gives them to opportunity to learn about how the Sunderland Team was back all the way when football was invented and it gives them a sort of enjoyment while learning and why it works is because it lets others enjoy what others feel about the team and much it means to them while providing a fair amount of knowledge to its audience expressing their identity, the mise en scen of this Documentary normally involves the general scenery and the main scenery for this is either in somebodies home, on the football pitch or in the outside world because these are the general settings of the film.
The colours are bright which brings out the happiness in the documentary which can lighten up someone's day when they are wanting to learn about history of Sunderland. How this works and why it does work is because it lets those who don't support the team or do not watch the football matches or go to watch the matches in the stadium listen to how it makes people figure out why football is apart of them and it brings happiness and it works because the Documentary series provides a lot of information and some heart felt moments that make people feel a sad/happy feeling in them which can show off how Football is apart of their identity.
